The Seasons Fund is an experimental granting structure aimed at supporting cultural projects around the globe deemed too early, too late, too radical, or too experimental to be eligible for traditional funding avenues.

Why We Fund Many cultural initiatives fall outside existing avenues of funding, whether due to their cross-regional reach, defiance of clear categorization, collaborative or communal methods, or focus outside discursive trends. Additionally, most sources of funding, arts or otherwise, are concentrated in the Global North. The Seasons Fund aims to fill such gaps. The Fund believes the promise of meritocracy most arts funding operates under is harmful. Therefore, grants from the Fund are not designed to convey prestige or act as a signifier of merit, but simply to ensure the viability of projects that support cultural justice—building a world in which cultural contributions of people from all social and economic backgrounds are equally valued.

Concurrently, the Seasons Fund supports grassroots organizations around the globe working towards social and environmental justice at large. We believe this work is an integral part of cultural justice, as the coalescent and interrelated crises of the present has created conditions that make it even harder for those working in the cultural field to continue their practice.

How We Fund Our annual budget is released twice a year and grants are offered until the funds have been depleted. The Fund’s founders review the applications with members of the Seasons Fund Circle, a small group of arts practitioners. This will mostly consist of previous grantees.

Once granted, the funds can be used freely, including to cover the applicant’s living, travel and emergency expenses. The measure of the project’s success is defined by the grantee, who provides an outline of the desired outcomes as part of the application process. These are reviewed periodically using the timetable, tools and methods defined by the grantee.

What We Fund The Seasons Fund provides critical multiyear funding for cultural projects that have few other resources—whether financial or institutional—available. Applications are judged on how far removed a proposal is from other funding sources and how meaningful the project’s contribution would be towards greater cultural justice.

However, the project should touch on one or more of the following priorities:
Works outside current commercial and/or discursive trends.Fosters exchange and solidarity across disparate discourses, communities, and histories. Explores alternative models of distribution, funding, cooperation and collaboration, especially networked and grassroots approaches. Promotes a spirit of internationalism and South-to-South movements, dialogues and collaborations.Develops a knowledge base accessible and meaningful to those outside cultural capitals.

Fund Origins The Seasons Fund was initiated by two arts practitioners in the United States who have received an inheritence from a recently-successful venture in the cosmetic industry. Their main desire is to redistribute the financial resources they have gained access to rather than become philanthropic figureheads. Therefore, they have chosen to remain anonymous.
